Dr. Karen Aucoin, Department Head

The Department of Mathematical Sciences supports the mission of McNeese State University by offering quality programs of study in the mathematical sciences for degree and non-degree students. The department offers college-level courses for majors as well as college-level courses for non-majors, and special courses to professionals who wish to update their knowledge in various areas of the mathematical sciences. The department seeks to promote and encourage scholarly activities and service from all mathematical science faculty.

Curricula

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences degree with concentrations in mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, and mathematical physics. A double major is offered in computer science and mathematical sciences. With additional coursework, students may obtain more than one concentration.

General education courses in the mathematical sciences are offered to meet the needs of students who do their major work in other departments of the university.

Students majoring in mathematical sciences receive the basic preparation for work in business and industry, as well as undergraduate prerequisites for work on advanced degrees. The curricula also provide experiences in liberal arts.

Graduation Requirements

A student in the Department of Mathematical Sciences must meet all graduation requirements listed in the  “Graduation Requirements”  portion of the academic regulations section of this catalog. All course work in the mathematical sciences that the student applies toward a degree must be accomplished with a minimum grade of C. In addition, credit for courses taken at other universities (regardless of subject area) with a grade below C cannot be applied toward a mathematical sciences degree.

Each student is also required to complete a capstone experience which includes taking a departmental test in the major area. A student majoring in mathematical sciences with a concentration in mathematics education is responsible for all requirements pertaining to teacher education preparation.

Mathematics Placement Tests

Tests in mathematics are given to place students in the proper mathematics sequence. These tests may not be retaken for placement or credit.

CO-OP and Intern Programs with Industry

Mathematical science students who enroll in MATH 399 or STAT 399 for 3 hours, working full-time in a co-op program, and making progress towards a mathematical science degree are considered full-time students in the fall or spring semesters to prevent student loans from entering repayment status, for insurance purposes, and for citizenship and immigration services reporting. Co-op and intern students are selected by industry based on grades, experience, and interviews. A co-op or intern position cannot be guaranteed to any applicant.

Minors

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers minors in mathematics and statistics. Requirements are listed in each program. All course work applied to these minors must be accomplished with a minimum grade of C.

Graduate Studies

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program leading to the Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences degree. The student may choose a concentration in mathematics, computer science, or statistics. Additional information about graduate programs at McNeese is available on the William J. Dore’ School of Graduate Studies page in this catalog.
