General Studies

The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) with concentrations in Arts and Humanities, Applied and Natural Sciences, and Behavioral Sciences is a broad based, interdisciplinary program that offers students the opportunity to develop critical thinking and cultural awareness through an individualized course of study. Students cannot pursue the BGS concurrently with another baccalaureate degree. Students who wish to pursue the BGS as a second degree will not be permitted to apply the major hours from the primary degree to the concentration area in the General Studies curriculum.

Subject Area Blocks

Students pursuing the Bachelor of General Studies must choose one of the following blocks for the Concentration Area. The two remaining blocks must be used as Enrichment Areas. 

Arts and Humanities Block

Art, Art Education, Baritone, Bassoon, Cello, Clarinet, Communication, English, Flute, Foreign Languages, French, French Horn, German, Greek, Guitar, Harp, History, Humanities, Latin, Mass Communication, Music, Music Education, Oboe, Percussion, Philosophy, Piano, Religious Studies, Saxophone, Spanish, String Bass, Theatre, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Voice, Women’s Studies

No more than eight (8) hours of music ensemble courses may be applied to the BGS.

Applied and Natural Sciences Block

Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Agriculture, Agronomy, Animal Science, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Studies, Computer Science, Electronics, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geology, Health Systems Management, Instrumentation, Mathematics, Medical Laboratory Science, Natural Resource Conservation Management, Nursing, Nutrition and Food Science, Physical Science, Physics, Process Plant Technology, Radiologic Sciences, Statistics, Technology, Wildlife Management

  • Concentration Area Electives - 18 hours
  • Concentration Area Electives (300/400 Level) - 18 hours

Additional Requirements - 43 hours


  • Elective - 1 hour
  • Electives (300/400 Level) - 15 hours
  • Enrichment Area 1 - 9 hours
  • Enrichment Area 1 (300/400 Level) - 3 hours
  • Enrichment Area 2 - 9 hours
  • Enrichment Area 2 (300/400 Level) - 3 hours

Notes:


  • No more than 8 credit hours of HHP Activity  courses and no more than 8 credit hours of Music Ensemble  courses will be applied toward the degree.
  • Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or better in GNST 400 (Capstone Course).

General Notes


  • All Baccalaureate degrees must include 40 hours at the 300/400 level.
  • All Baccalaureate degrees require at least one course from the life sciences and one course from the physical sciences categories in Area C of the General Education Core Curriculum.
  • All Baccalaureate degrees must include 12 hours of Writing Enriched courses in the General Education Core Curriculum and 6 hours in the major.
  • All Associate degrees must include 6 hours of Writing Enriched courses in the General Education Core Curriculum and 3 hours in the major.
