Office of Advising

The Office of Advising was established to offer academic advising and support to students from the time of their admission until they transfer to a faculty advisor in their major department as part of the University’s dedication to excellence in undergraduate education. However, as incoming freshman, some majors report directly to their college. Academic departments will provide advice to students majoring in education, music, and theater arts beginning as a freshman. During their meetings, advisors assist students with goal setting, career discovery, major selection, educational planning, and course selection. This experience enhances the learning environment in every community the University serves.

Once sophomores have earned a minimum of 45 credit hours with an overall GPA of 2.2, they will be transferred to the academic department of their chosen major for advising. Students who do not meet these requirements will remain in the Office of Advising until 59 credit hours are earned.

Exceptions are made for students entering Health Professions which require clinicals (Nursing and Radiological Sciences). These students are transferred after attaining 12 credit hours with a 2.5 GPA or higher or 24 credit hours regardless of GPA.

Freshmen and sophomores are advised based upon their selected major and according to the core curriculum listed in the catalog. After admission to the University, students seeking to change majors must notify their academic advisor to receive instructions as to their next steps. Once the advisor has been notified and the major has been changed in the student information system, the student will be subject to the regulations of the catalog in effect at the time the major is selected.
