The Art, Photography/Art Education Grades K-12 Concentration, BA program leads to initial teacher certification. All teacher education preparation requirements must be satisfied for this degree.

Teacher Education Requirements


Must achieve one of the following:

  • ACT ≥ 20;
  • SAT ≥ 1050 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
    • Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156.
    • Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162.
    • Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.

Always check with your advisor concerning test numbers and passing scores as they are subject to change.

Teacher Education Requirements


EDUC 200 packet must be approved prior to enrolling in EDUC and SPED 300/400 level courses.

Teacher Education Requirements


The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Grades K-6 (#5622), Grades 5-9 (#5623), or Grades 7-12 (#5624) exam must be passed prior to enrolling in ARED 470.

Teacher Education Requirements


The Praxis Art: Content Knowledge exam (#5134) must be passed prior to enrolling in ARED 470.

Junior Fall - 18 hours


Note:  ART 335 and ART 413 require 20 field experience hours each.

Teacher Education Requirements


Candidates must enroll in EDUC 300 the semester prior to enrolling in Student Teaching Residency I. The Praxis PLT and the Praxis content exams must be passed by the end of the semester in which the candidate is registered for EDUC 300.

Non-education courses taken during residency semesters must be scheduled either in the evening or online.

Senior Fall - 12 hours


Note:  EDUC 351 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 469 requires 20 field experience hours, and ARED 470 requires a minimum of 60% of the instructional week in an assigned grade K-12 classroom completing residency hours.

Senior Spring - 10 hours


Note:  ARED 472 requires 100% of the instructional week in an assigned grade K-12 classroom completing residency hours.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in ENGL 101,  ENGL 102, and MATH 113, as well as in all ARED, ART, EDUC, PSYC, and SPED courses.

General Notes


  • All bachelor’s degrees must include 40 hours at the 300/400 level.
  • All bachelor’s degrees require the successful completion of at least nine hours of Natural Sciences General Education Core Curriculum  courses. Six hours shall be earned in a single life or physical science; the remaining three hours must be earned in a natural science area other than that previously selected (both life and physical sciences must be taken to fulfill this requirement).
