English, Literature Concentration, MA


Total Hours Required for Degree: 30 (Thesis Option) or 36 (Non-thesis Option)

Program Admission


In addition to the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies, applicants for admission to the English, Literature Concentration, MA program must meet the following requirements:

  • A GPA of 3.25 for all undergraduate ENGL courses;
  • An application packet (consisting of a letter of application and an academic writing sample) sent to the Master of Arts advisor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages; and
  • Adequate preparation as determined by the department head and major professor.

The English, Literature Concentration, MA program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Requirements


  • ENGL Elective (500/600 Level) - 3 hours (Except ENGL 677 or ENGL 679)

Notes


  • One-half of the total number of hours required for the degree, excluding credit for the thesis, shall be in 600-level courses.
  • Students who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to complete the equivalent of 2 years of coursework in a foreign language. These students are also encouraged to complete a thesis.
  • In order to complete the requirements for the degree, students must pass comprehensive examinations, which include a comprehensive objective exam, a portfolio review, and a series of professor-directed individual exams.

General Notes


  • At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
  • Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
  • No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
  • Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
