Admission and Retention

First-time freshmen who have declared a major offered by the College of Business are advised by professional advisors in Basic Studies until a minimum of 12 hours and a cumulative 2.5 GPA is earned. Students with less than a 2.5 GPA remain in Basic Studies until 24 hours are earned; then students are transferred to be advised in the College of Business. Students who have not completed developmental courses may be retained in Basic Studies until 30 hours are earned.

Failure to earn a 2.0 overall grade-point average toward the degree for two consecutive semesters prohibits a student from taking additional courses offered by the College. The student may register for additional business courses when a minimum cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 is achieved. Business courses previously taken may be repeated while under this restriction.

To progress through the degree plan, students must complete course prerequisites in the current catalog. Students who do not have the required prerequisites for a course must drop the course in question through their department or they may be dropped from the course by their department at any time during the semester.

Transfer Students

Upper-division courses (numbered 300 and above) normally have prerequisites and are designated to be taken at the junior or senior level. If upper-level courses are taken at other institutions prior to the junior year or without the proper prerequisites required by the College of Business, they will not be automatically considered to meet McNeese requirements. Upper-level transfer courses can be validated by passing a challenge examination or, in some cases, by earning a grade of ‘C’ or better in an advanced course in the same subject. Such advanced courses, when applicable, will be determined by the department head and/or dean. Upper-division business courses taken at community or junior colleges may not transfer into the College of Business as an upper-level course. At least 50 percent of the business credit hours required for the degree must be earned in the College of Business at McNeese.
