The Department of Health and Human Performance purpose is threefold:
- Prepare teachers and coaches in the areas of health, physical, safety, driver, and recreation education.
- Promote proper health habits and physical fitness of University students.
- Provide and promote leadership in activities related to the profession.
The majors in Athletic Training, Health and Physical Education—Grades K-12 and Health, and Human Performance, General lead to a Bachelor of Science degree.
Students who want to assume a professional role in the Athletic Training profession should pursue the Athletic Training degree. Students who want to teach and/or coach should pursue the Health and Physical Education—Grades K-12 degree. This degree leads to teacher certification in Health and Physical Education.
Health and Human Performance, General, offers concentrations in Exercise Science, Health Promotion, and Sport Management. Exercise Science Concentration area is designed to serve those students primarily interested in entering physical therapy school. The Health Promotion Concentration area is designed for those students interested in pursuing careers in the wellness and fitness industry. The Sport Management concentration is designed for those students interested in managing and marketing Athletics.
Changing from one concentration to another requires a catalog change.
All students majoring in Health and Human Performance must meet all graduation requirements listed in the section titled “Graduation Requirements” in the General Information section of this catalog. Only Health and Human Performance courses with a grade of “C” or higher may be applied toward the degree.
Students pursuing the Health and Physical Education—Grades K-12 degree should also refer to requirements for student teaching and teacher certification in the Burton College of Education.
Students pursuing teacher certification should obtain certification in a second teaching area. Certification requirements for a second teaching area may be obtained from the advisor.
Students pursuing Exercise Science or Health Promotion concentrations must meet the following requirements for internship candidacy: (1) Completed course work of at least 90 hours with 2.5 overall GPA; (2) “C” or better in required English Composition (101-102) and grammar (351) classes; (3) Completed course work in HHP 111, 331, 341, 345, 435 and 448 or permission of Concentration Coordinator.
The Department of Health and Human Performance offers a major in Health and Human Performance leading to the Master of Science degree. Concentrations are available in Exercise Physiology, Health Promotion, and Nutrition and Wellness.
Intramural Sports and Recreation Complex

An intramural sports program for men and women provides outlets for physical and recreational talents of the student body. Intramural contests are held in flag football, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, free throw, table tennis, swimming, golf, horseshoes, pool, racquetball, and water polo. Awards and recognition are given to student winners. Students enter competition representing fraternities, sororities, dorms, school clubs, organizations, religious student centers, and independents.
McNeese University is not responsible for any injury which a student receives in any intramural activity. Students engage in these activities at their own risk.
The Intramural Office is located in the Recreation Complex with office hours from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
Recreational facilities include: 50-meter swimming pool, steam/sauna room, shower/ locker rooms, four racquetball courts, three full-length basketball courts, 8,000 square foot weight room, 200-meter indoor track (four lane), equipment rental options, 12-acre intramural playing fields, and outdoor tennis courts.
Hours of operation are 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. A validated McNeese ID is required for admission.
