Purpose

The Department of History is organized to offer curricula in History, Liberal Studies and to provide service courses in history for other departments of the University. Students in History may select Social Studies Education-Grades 6-12 as a concentration. Students that choose Liberal Studies must select an area of concentration in Geography, Humanities, Louisiana Studies, Philosophy, Pre-Law, Religious Studies, Southeastern American Indian Studies, or Theatre Arts.

The objectives of the department are:

  1. To offer to students an opportunity to broaden their knowledge of man’s past and their understanding of the present.
  2. To provide a liberal education leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in History for students who major in history.
  3. To provide a minor in history for students who major in another curriculum.
  4. To provide in-depth coursework leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies for students who choose one of the academic disciplines or content areas of concentration offered.
  5. To provide teacher education preparation leading to certification in Social Studies Education—Grades 6-12.
  6. To prepare exceptionally able students for graduate study.

Graduation Requirements

A student in the Department of History must meet all graduation requirements listed in the section titled “Graduation Requirements” found in the Academic Regulation section of this catalog. A student choosing Social Studies Education—Grades 6-12 is also responsible for all requirements pertaining to Teacher Education Preparation.

In selecting courses to serve as free electives, students majoring in History or Liberal Studies may apply up to eight (8) semester hours of credit earned in Health and Human Performance activities courses toward the degree requirements of these curricula.

Minor

The Department of History offers a minor in history. Requirements are as follows: 21 hours of history, including HIST 101 and 102 or HIST 121 and 122; 201, 202 and an additional 9 hours, subject to the approval of the department head, on the 300-400 level.
