Creative Writing-Poetry Concentration

Prerequisites

In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program must meet the following requirements:

• Adequate preparation as determined by the department head and the major professor.  Students should submit a selection of 15 to 20 poems, several short stories, or a few chapters from a novel with a letter of application to the department head.

Requirements

• ENGL Electives (500/600 Level) - 21 hours
• ENGL Electives (600 Level) - 6 hours

• ENGL 546 - Late Twentieth-Century Poetry (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• ENGL 671 - Creative Writing Workshop (Poetry) (Lec. 3, Cr. 3) (Must be repeated to accrue 12 credit hours)
• ENGL 673 - Form and Theory of Poetry I (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• ENGL 674 - Form and Theory of Poetry II (Cr. 3)
• ENGL 675 - Form and Theory of Fiction I (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• ENGL 690 - Professional Endeavors (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• ENGL 699 - Thesis (Cr. 1-6) (Must accrue 6 credit hours)

General Notes:

• Credits applied must be earned within 8 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
• No grades below ‘C’ and not more than 6 credit hours of ‘C’ work can be applied toward the degree.
• Only transfer credits with a grade of ‘B’ or better may be applied toward the degree.
