Prerequisites
In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in English program must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum score of 287 on the GRE (Verbal + Quantitative).
- A GPA of 3.25 for all undergraduate ENGL courses.
- An application packet (consisting of a letter of application and an academic writing sample) sent to the Master of Arts advisor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.
- Adequate preparation as determined by the department head and major professor.

Notes:
- One-half of the total number of hours required for the degree, excluding credit for the thesis, shall be in 600-level courses.
- Students who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to complete the equivalent of 2 years coursework in a foreign language. These students are also encouraged to complete a thesis.
- In order to complete the requirements for the degree, students must pass comprehensive examinations, which include a comprehensive objective exam, a portfolio review, and a series of professor-directed individual exams.
General Notes
- Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
- No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
- Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
