General Studies-Applied and Natural Sciences Concentration

Total Hours Required for Degree:  120

The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) with a concentration in Applied and Natural Sciences is a broad based, interdisciplinary program that offers students the opportunity to develop critical thinking and cultural awareness through an individualized course of study. Students cannot pursue the BGS concurrently with another baccalaureate degree. Students who wish to pursue the BGS as a second degree will not be permitted to apply the major hours from the primary degree to the concentration area in the General Studies curriculum.

Subject Area Blocks

The Applied and Natural Sciences Block will be used as the Concentration Area. The two remaining blocks must be used as Enrichment Areas.

No more than eight (8) hours of music ensemble courses may be applied to the BGS.

No more than eight (8) hours of HHP activity courses may be applied to the BGS.

Concentration - 37 hours


  • Applied and Natural Sciences Electives - 18 hours
  • Applied and Natural Sciences Electives (300/400 Level) - 18 hours

Additional Requirements - 44 hours


  • Arts and Humanities Elective (300/400 Level) - 3 hours
  • Arts and Humanities Electives - 9 hours
  • Behavioral Sciences Elective (300/400 Level) - 3 hours
  • Behavioral Sciences Electives - 9 hours
  • Electives - 5 hours
  • Electives (300/400 Level) - 15 hours

Notes


  • No more than 8 credit hours of HHP Activity  courses and no more than 8 credit hours of Music Ensemble  courses will be applied toward the degree.
  • Students must earn a grade of C or better in GNST 400 (Capstone Course).

General Notes


  • All Baccalaureate degrees must include 40 hours at the 300/400 level.
  • All Baccalaureate degrees require at least one course from the life sciences and one course from the physical sciences categories in Area C of the General Education Core Curriculum.
  • All Baccalaureate degrees must include 12 hours of Writing Enriched courses in the General Education Core Curriculum and 6 hours in the major.
  • All Associate degrees must include 6 hours of Writing Enriched courses in the General Education Core Curriculum and 3 hours in the major.
