Prerequisites

In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in English program must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum score of 1100 on the GRE formula (150 x undergraduate GPA + GRE [Verbal + Quantitative] score).
  • Adequate preparation as determined by department head and major professor.

Requirements

Total Hours: 30

  • *Other courses in English - 21
  • Thesis - 6
    In lieu of a thesis, a candidate may elect to take 12 additional hours in English (for a total of 36 credit hours for the degree).

*Must include at least one course in each of the following areas:

I. World Literature:

  • ENGL 661

II. Medieval and Renaissance Literature:

III. Eighteenth Century Literature:

IV. Nineteenth Century Literature:

V. Twentieth Century and American Literature:

  • ENGL 661

VI. Language and Criticism:

Notes

One-half of the total number of hours required for the degree, excluding credit for the thesis, shall be in courses open to graduate students only.
