General Studies (A.G.S.)

Associate of General Studies

The Associate degree in General Studies with concentrations in Arts and Humanities, Applied and Natural Sciences, and Behavioral Sciences is a broad based, interdisciplinary program that offers students the opportunity to develop critical thinking and cultural awareness through an individualized course of study.

Subject Area Blocks

Students pursuing the Associate degree in General Studies must choose one of the following blocks for the Concentration Area.

Arts and Humanities Block

Art, Art Education, Communication, English, Foreign Languages, History, Mass Communication, Music, Music Education, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Theatre, Women’s Studies

Applied and Natural Sciences Block

Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Animal Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Computer Science, Electricity, Electronics, Engineering Technology, Environmental Science, Geology, Instrumentation, Mathematics, Nutrition and Food Science, Physical Science, Physics, Process Plant Technology, Radiologic Sciences, Technology, Wildlife Management
Behavioral
Sciences Block
Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Education, Family and Child Studies, Geography, Government, Health and Human Performance*, Office Systems and Business Communication, Paralegal Studies, Psychology, Sociology
*No more than four (4) hours of Basic or Intermediate Skills and Techniques may be applied to the AGS.

Students who wish to pursue the Associate of General Studies (AGS) must meet the following requirements:

  • Must earn a GPA of 2.0 or better in all courses counted toward the degree.
  • Must earn a grade of “C” or better in both English 101 and 102.
  • Must complete an international education component chosen with the guidance of the General Studies advisor.

Notes


26 HOURS OF NATURAL SCIENCES ARE REQUIRED TO BE SEQUENTIAL. Sequences: BIOL 101-102; BIOL 105-106; CHEM 101-102; CHEM 135-136; ENSC 101-102; GEOL 101-102; PHSC 101-102; PHYS 151, 211.
3Course must be selected from section #9 of the General Education Requirements  section.
4Refer to Subject Area Block descriptions for concentration and enrichment area options.
5Must complete a computer literacy component chosen with the guidance of the General Studies Advisor.
