English (B.A.)


Students majoring in English who seek admission to law school should see recommendations under “Preparation for Law School” and ask their advisor to integrate the recommended courses into their curriculum.

Notes


1Six (6) hours must be selected from the approved Writing Enriched courses- see General Education Core Curriculum  section.
2Must include both biological and physical sciences. Six-hour sequence recommended.
3Twelve hours of the core curriculum electives must be taken from the following groups outside the major area: Group II-Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Government, Mass Communication, Sociology, Psychology; Group III-Art, Foreign Language, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Speech, Theatre. A minimum of 3 hours must be taken from each group. At least 9 hours of electives must be 300 or above.

Comparative Literature Concentration


Students choosing to earn a B.A. with a concentration in Comparative Literature must meet the above requirements, although they are not required to take British History, PHIL 201, and ENGL 475. They are required to take six (6) hours of a second foreign language and ENGL 491. Upon approval, they may substitute two of the following classes for ENGL 201-202 or ENGL 301-302, ENGL 221, ENGL 404, ENGL 455, ENGL 479, or other courses approved by the department head.

English Education Concentration


Students seeking certification to teach English on the secondary level can pursue a concentration in English Education. The following courses must be taken to qualify for this concentration: ENGL 101-102, MATH 113 or 170, Mathematics Elective, Science Electives (9 hours), HIST 201-202, ART 262, ENGL 201, 202, 221, 301, 302, 351, 421/422, 401, 402, 410, 455, 475, 483/484, EDTC 100 (1 hour), 245, EDUC 200, 204, 333, 351, 404, 412, 440, 468S (9 hours), PSYC 211, 311, Foreign Languages 101, 102, 201, 202. Some of these required courses may substitute for other classes outlined in the degree plan.

Writing Concentration


Students choosing to earn a B.A. with a concentration in Writing must meet the above requirements, although they are not required to take British History, PHIL 201, and ENGL 431 or ENGL 451 or ENGL 491. They are required to take ENGL 351, ENGL 361, and 12 hours of ENGL 253, ENGL 442, and ENGL 443 (each of which may be repeated once for credit), 6 hours of which may substitute for ENGL 201-202, ENGL 301-302, or ENGL 401-402.
