Purpose

The Department of Health and Human Performance purpose is threefold:

  1. Prepare teachers and coaches in the areas of health, physical, safety, driver, and recreation education;
  2. Promote proper health habits and physical fitness of University students; and
  3. Provide and promote leadership in activities related to the profession.

Curricula

The Bachelor of Science in health and human performance, general, offers concentrations in exercise science, sport and wellness management, and sports medicine. The exercise science concentration is designed to serve those students primarily interested in entering physical occupational therapy school. The sport and wellness management concentration is designed for those students interested in managing and marketing athletics and/or working in the wellness industry. The sports medicine concentration is designed for those students interested in seeking a master’s degree in athletic training. Additionally the Department of Health and Human Performance offers curricula leading to the Bachelor of Science in health and physical education grades K-12.

Graduation Requirements

Only health and human performance courses with a grade of C or better may be applied toward the degree.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education grades K-12 must meet all requirements for admission and progression through the teacher education program, student teaching, and graduation as stated on the Burton College of Education  page.

Students pursuing teacher certification should obtain certification in a second teaching area. Certification requirements for a second teaching area may be obtained from an advisor.

Students pursuing the exercise science or sport and wellness management concentrations must meet the following requirements for internship candidacy: (1) Completed at least 90 hours of coursework with an overall GPA of 2.5; (2) Completed ENGL 101, ENGL 102, and ENGL 351 with a C or better; (3) Completed HHP 111, 331, 341, 345, 435, and 448 or receive permission from the concentration coordinator.

Students in the Department of Health and Human Performance must meet all of the graduation requirements listed in the Degree and Graduation Requirements  section of the Academic Regulations page.

Graduate Studies
