School Counseling, MEd


Total Hours Required for Degree:  48

The School Counseling, MEd program is transitioning the current 48-credit hour, CaCREP-accredited curriculum into the required 60-credit hour program for future candidates. Candidates will not be admitted into the School Counseling program during the 2021-2022 academic year during this transition process. Please monitor the website for updates and information regarding the development and approval of the program. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, our intention is to develop and expand the curriculum to best support our candidates to be effective, successful counselors who make an impact on the students and communities they serve.

Program Admission


In addition to the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies, applicants for admission to the School Counseling, MEd program must have:

  • Minimum of 18 credit hours at the 300+ level in education, behavioral studies (criminal justice, psychology, sociology, etc.), or another discipline as approved by the department head; and
  • One of the following:
    • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; or
    • Minimum undergraduate GPA between 2.7 and 2.99 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral​ and a minimum Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 304 (Verbal + Quantitative).

The School Counseling, MEd program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Requirements


General Notes


  • At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
  • Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
  • No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
  • Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
