English, Literature Concentration, BA/MA


Total Hours Required for Dual Degrees:  150

The accelerated, dual degree path to a Master of Arts in English allows exceptional undergraduate students in the English, Literature Concentration, BA program to earn up to 12 hours of graduate coursework during the senior year, up to 6 hours of which may be used to satisfy both the bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements. Once students have graduated with the Bachelor of Arts degree, they may then complete the requirements for the Master of Arts degree in one additional year with 24 credit hours.

Dual Degree Requirements


To apply for acceptance into the English, BA/MA dual degree program, students must:

  • Have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher; and
  • Once 60 credit hours have been earned toward the bachelor’s degree, submit a complete dual degree application packet to the Department of English and Foreign Languages that includes the following:
    • Dual degree program application form;
    • Writing sample; and
    • Two letters of recommendation from faculty in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.

Junior Spring - 15 hours


Dual Degree Requirements


Once 90 credit hours have been earned toward the bachelor’s degree and upon acceptance into the dual degree program, a student:

  • Can enroll in up to 12 graduate credit hours during the final 30 credit hours of the bachelor’s degree;
  • Must graduate with the bachelor’s degree once all requirements for that degree are met;
  • Is classified as an undergraduate student and is charged undergraduate tuition and fees until the bachelor’s degree is awarded;
  • Is classified as a graduate student and is charged graduate tuition and fees after the bachelor’s degree is awarded;
  • Can continue enrolling in graduate coursework provided an overall graduate GPA of 3.0 and an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.2 are maintained.
  • Is not required to complete a graduate application for admission to the master’s degree program provided enrollment after the awarding of the bachelor’s degree is continuous during fall and spring semesters.

Senior Fall - 17 hours


  • Elective - 2 hours
  • ENGL Elective (500/600 Level) - 3 hours (Except ENGL 677 or ENGL 679)

Graduate Fall - 12 hours


  • ENGL Electives (500/600 Level) - 12 hours (Except ENGL 677 or ENGL 679; see note below)

Graduate Spring - 12 hours

Undergraduate Notes:

  • All bachelor’s degrees must include 40 hours at the 300 level or higher.
  • All bachelor’s degrees require at least one life science course and one physical science course from the Natural Sciences area of the General Education Core Curriculum.
  • All degree and graduation requirements may be found on the Academic Regulations page.
  • Students must earn a grade of C or better in all ENGL courses.
  • Students who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to complete the equivalent of 2 years coursework in a foreign language.

Graduate Notes:

  • One-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree must be at the 600 level.
  • Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
  • No grade below B may be applied toward the degree, including transfer work.
  • In order to complete the requirements for the degree, students must pass all comprehensive examinations, which include a comprehensive objective exam, a portfolio review, and a series of professor-directed individual exams.
