Early Childhood Education Grades PK-3, BS

Total Hours Required for Degree:  120

The Early Childhood Education Grades PK-3, BS program leads to initial teacher certification. All teacher education preparation requirements must be satisfied for this degree.

Teacher Education Requirements


Must achieve one of the following as a component of the EDUC 200 packet:

  • ACT ≥ 20;
  • SAT ≥ 1050 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
  • Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
    • Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156.
    • Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162.
    • Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.

Always check with your advisor concerning test numbers and passing scores as they are subject to change.

Teacher Education Requirements


EDUC 200 packet must be approved prior to enrolling in EDUC and SPED 300/400 level courses.

The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Early Childhood exam (#5621) must be passed prior to enrolling in EDUC 470P.

The Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam (#5001) must be passed prior to enrolling in EDUC 470P.

Teacher Education Requirements


Candidates must enroll in EDUC 300 the semester prior to enrolling in EDUC 470P - Student Teaching Residency I. The Praxis PLT and the Praxis content exams must be passed by the end of the semester in which the candidate is registered for EDUC 300.

Junior Spring - 15 hours


Note:  EDUC 324 and EDUC 335 require 15 field experience hours each, EDUC 409 and EDUC 416 require 20 field experience hours each, and EDUC 421 requires 40 field experience hours. 

Teacher Education Requirements


Non-education courses taken during residency semesters must be scheduled either in the evening or online.

Senior Fall - 12 hours


​Note:  EDUC 351 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 469 and SPED 403 require 20 field experience hours each, and EDUC 470P requires a minimum of 80% of the instructional week in an assigned grade K-3 classroom completing residency hours.

Senior Spring - 10 hours


Note:  SPED 453 requires 10 field experience hours, and EDUC 472P requires a minimum of 100% of the instructional week in an assigned grade K-3 classroom completing residency hours.

Note


Students must earn a grade of C or better in EDTC 245, ENGL 101, ENGL 102, ENGL 351, MATH 113, MATH 122, and MATH 222, as well as in all EDUC, PSYC, and SPED courses.

General Notes


  • All bachelor’s degrees must include 40 hours at the 300/400 level.
  • All bachelor’s degrees require the successful completion of at least nine hours of Natural Sciences General Education Core Curriculum  courses. Six hours shall be earned in a single life or physical science; the remaining three hours must be earned in a natural science area other than that previously selected (both life and physical sciences must be taken to fulfill this requirement).
