Teacher Education Preparation Portals

PORTAL ONE: Declaration of a Major
A student who selects a teacher education program as a major but has not yet enrolled in EDUC 200 has entered Portal One. First-time freshmen are advised in the Office of Freshman Advising for a maximum of one year. Once a freshman has declared a major, earned a minimum of 12 credit hours, earned an overall GPA of 2.5, and successfully completed any required developmental coursework, they will be transferred to the academic department of their chosen major for advising. Students not meeting these requirements will remain in the Office of Freshman Advising until 24 credit hours are earned. Assignment to a teacher education advisor does not imply acceptance into a teacher education program.
PORTAL TWO: Admission to a Teacher Education Baccalaureate Program
Prerequisites
Students must meet the following requirements to be admitted into Portal Two: Admission to a Teacher Education Program:
- Officially declare a major in a teacher education program;
- Complete 30 semester hours of coursework with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5;
- Grade of A or S in EDUC 110;
- Grade of C or better in EDUC 204 or, for those with a music education concentration, MUED 226
- Grade of C or better in ENGL 101 and ENGL 102;
- Grade of C or better in MATH 105 or MATH 113 as required by program;
- Grade of C or better in all required EDTC, EDUC, PSYC, and SPED courses completed at the time of EDUC 200 packet submission;
- Grade of C or better in primary teaching area for those with a K-12 or secondary education concentration;
- One of the following:
- ACT ≥ 22;
- SAT ≥ 1100 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
- Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
- Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156;
- Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162; and
- Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.
- Completion and approval of the EDUC 200 application for admissions packet, which consists of the following:
- Admission Application Form;
- Professional Conduct 1 Form;
- Student Pre-Collegiate Narrative and Graded Rubric from EDUC 204/MUED 226;
- Official copy of ACT, SAT, or Praxis scores;
- EDUC 200 Seminar Certificate of Completion; and
- Mandatory Reporter Certificate.
Additional information on admission to a teacher education program may be obtained from the Department of Education Professions, an advisor, or from the Office of Clinical Practices and School Partnerships.
Privileges
- Credit for EDUC 200; and
- Ability to enroll in 300/400-level education and special education courses.
PORTAL THREE: Assignment to Teacher Residency
The teacher education candidate prepares for teacher residency by completing all required content area and preliminary professional education courses and passing all licensure tests. EDUC 300 must be taken the semester prior to the first semester of teacher residency. In EDUC 300, students will submit all required test scores, a teacher residency license application, and other materials necessary prior to beginning the residency.
Prerequisites
In order to fulfill the requirements of EDUC 300 and be eligible to begin the teacher residency, the following must be completed:
- MSU application for teacher residency;
- Junior standing;
- Minimum scores on Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam and content area exam, if applicable (refer to the appropriate program page in this catalog or the Department of Education Professions for specific exam requirements);
- Grade of C or better in all content area and professional education courses;
- Minimum overall GPA of 2.5;
- All required prerequisite methods courses; and
- Application for Teacher Residency Certificate from the state.
Privilege

PORTAL FOUR: Recommendation for Graduation and Certification
A candidate who successfully completes all program coursework including two consecutive semesters of teacher residency and holds a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 should have completed all requirements for graduation and certification. The candidate’s department will check all graduation requirements and recommend that candidate for graduation. The Office of Clinical Practices and School Partnerships will assist candidates in completing an application for certification. The McNeese State University certification specialist will review the application for completion of all requirements and then forward to the Louisiana Department of Education with the recommendation that the candidate be certified. EDTC, EDUC, and SPED courses over 10 years old relative to a student’s current/active term may not be applied toward an undergraduate certificate, degree, or minor offered by the Department of Education Professions.
Prerequisite
- Successful completion of all graduation and certification requirements.
Privilege
- Recommendation for graduation and state certification.
PORTAL ONE: Declaration of a Minor
A student who chooses to enroll in a teacher education minor program of study but has not yet enrolled in EDUC 299 has entered Portal One.
PORTAL TWO: Admission to a Teacher Education Minor Program
Prerequisites
Students must meet the following requirements to be admitted into Portal Two: Admission to Teacher Education Minor Program:
- Complete 30 semester hours of coursework with a minimum overall GPA of 2.5;
- Grade of A or S in EDUC 110;
- Passing scores on Praxis content area exam with sub-scores;
- One of the following:
- ACT ≥ 22;
- SAT ≥ 1100 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
- Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
- Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156;
- Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162; and
- Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.
- Completion and approval of the EDUC 299 application for admissions packet, which consists of the following:
- Admission Application Form;
- Professional Conduct 1 Form;
- Student Pre-Collegiate Narrative and Graded Rubric from EDUC 204;

PORTAL THREE: Transitioning from Teacher Education Minor Program to Post-Baccalaureate Program
Students completing a baccalaureate degree with a minor in teacher education will be eligible to begin a teaching career with a temporary teaching certificate upon graduation. To become a certified teacher, candidates will need 14 credit hours of additional coursework and the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam.
Candidates transitioning from a minor to a PBC program will need the following coursework:
- EDUC 351 (Cr. 3)
- EDUC 400 (Cr. 0)
- EDUC 416 (Cr. 3; for elementary candidates) or SPED 424 (Cr. 3, for secondary candidates)
- EDUC 416 or SPED 424 may be taken prior to graduation if all prerequisites are met. EDUC 416 may not be taken during the residency semester.
- EDUC 460 (Cr. 3) or EDUC 462 (Cr. 3)
- EDUC 461 (Cr. 3) or EDUC 463 (Cr. 3)
- EDUC 469 (Cr. 2)
Requirements for Admission to Teacher Residency:
- Acceptance into a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; and
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 on minor coursework.
- Passing score on the Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam
- EDUC 400 - Admission to Teacher Residency - Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (Cr. 0)

- Grade of C or better in all program coursework;

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs

A student who chooses to enroll in a teacher education post-baccalaureate certificate program but has not yet enrolled in EDUC 499 has entered Portal One. To enter Portal One, students must meet the general requirements for admission and the following prerequisites:
- Possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a USDOE-approved institutional accreditor;
- Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; and
- Achieve one of the following:
- ACT ≥ 22
- SAT ≥ 1100 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math
- Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
- Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150
- Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162
- Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156
- Pass the Praxis content-specific examination(s) in the content area in which they are seeking certification.
Students are assigned to an advisor in the Burton College of Education. Assignment to an advisor does not imply official acceptance into the teacher education program.
PORTAL TWO: Admission to a Teacher Education Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program
Prerequisites
Students must complete all of the following requirements to be admitted into Portal Two: Admission to a Teacher Education Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program:
- Completion of an EDUC 499 packet, which consists of the following:
- Admission Application Form;
- Certificate of Attendance for EDUC 499 seminar;
- Grade of A or S in EDUC 110;
- Mandatory Reporter Certificate;
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral;
- Professional Conduct 1 Form;
- Student Pre-Collegiate Narrative and Graded Rubric;
- Official passing scores on Praxis content area exam with sub-scores; and
- One of the following:
- ACT ≥ 22;
- SAT ≥ 1100 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
- Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
- Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156;
- Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162; and
- Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.

Master of Arts in Teaching Programs

A student who chooses to enroll in a teacher education Master of Arts in Teaching program but has not yet enrolled in EDUC 599 has entered Portal One. To enter Portal One, students must meet the general requirements for admission and the following prerequisites:
- Possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a USDOE-approved institutional accreditor;
- Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; and
- Achieve one of the following:

Prerequisites
Students must complete all of the following Portal Two requirements to be admitted into a Master of Arts in Teaching program:
- Completion of an EDUC 599 packet, which consists of the following:
- Admission Application Form;
- Mandatory Reporter Certificate;
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral;
- Professional Conduct 1 Form;
- Student Pre-Collegiate Narrative and Graded Rubric from EDUC 647 (if not previously completed, student must concurrently enroll in EDUC 647 and EDUC 599);
- Official passing scores on Praxis content area exam with sub-scores; and
- One of the following:
- Master’s degree from an accredited university;
- ACT ≥ 22;
- SAT ≥ 1100 combined Evidence-Based Reading and Writing + Math; or
- Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (pass all three):
- Reading (#5713) with a score ≥ 156;
- Writing (#5723) with a score ≥ 162; and
- Mathematics (#5733) with a score ≥ 150.

PORTAL THREE: Assignment to Teacher Residency

In EDUC 600, students will submit all required test scores, a teacher residency license application, and other materials necessary prior to beginning the residency.

Students must be currently enrolled in or have completed all required pre-residency coursework prior to the residency semester in order to enroll in EDUC 600. In order to fulfill the requirements of EDUC 600 and be eligible to begin the teacher residency, the following must be completed:
- MSU application for teacher residency;
- Minimum scores on Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) exam;
- Grade of C or better in all pre-residency program coursework;
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on all program coursework;
- All required prerequisite methods courses; and
- Application for Teacher Residency Certificate from the state.
Additional requirements may be included in the course as needed for state certification.

PORTAL FOUR: Completion of Comprehensive Final Exam and Recommendation for Graduation and Certification
Students must complete a comprehensive final examination that is administered during the second semester of teacher residency. Students must successfully complete the comprehensive final examination in order to be eligible for graduation.
In addition, credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program. No grade below C and not more that 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward this degree.
A candidate who successfully completes all program coursework including two consecutive semesters of teacher residency, achieves a passing score on the comprehensive exam, and maintains a minimum program GPA of 3.0 should have completed all requirements. The candidate’s department will check all program requirements and recommend the candidate for graduation and certification. The Office of Clinical Practices and School Partnerships will assist candidates in completing an application for certification. The McNeese State University certification specialist will review the application for completion of all requirements and then forward to the Louisiana Department of Education a recommendation that the candidate be certified.

Master of Education Programs
PORTAL ONE: Declaration of a Major
Students enrolling in a Master of Education program are assigned to an advisor in the Burton College of Education. In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Education program must have the following prior to the first semester of enrollment:
- Evidence of a valid teaching certificate; and
- One of the following:
- Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; or
- Minimum undergraduate GPA between 2.70 and 2.99 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral and a minimum Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 304 (Verbal + Quantitative).
PORTAL TWO: Official Admission into the Master of Education Program
Students enrolling in EDUC 603 must complete the following in order to progress into Portal Two coursework:
- EDUC 603 packet;
- Site Mentor Information Form to begin the approval process; and
- Signed Handbook Acknowledgment of Understanding.
Privileges
- Credit for EDUC 603; and
- Ability to enroll in Portal Three coursework.
PORTAL THREE: Program Coursework
The Master of Education candidate progresses through the program by completing all of the required coursework, maintaining a minimum overall and term GPA of 3.0, and passing any licensure exams applicable to the concentration area chosen.
PORTAL FOUR: Completion of Comprehensive Final Exam and Recommendation for Graduation and Add-on Certification
Students must successfully complete a comprehensive final examination in order to be eligible for graduation.
In addition, credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program. No grade below C and not more that 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward this degree.
