Mission

The primary mission of the College of Science is to offer high quality and student-engaging undergraduate and graduate science and mathematics programs and courses. The course offerings in the sciences and mathematics are designed to satisfy the requirements for the degrees in science or mathematics; for the core curriculum; and for other degrees and programs. The College of Science responds through its departments, faculty, staff and students to McNeese State University’s mission and core values of student success, academic excellence, fiscal responsibility, and university-community linkages. Faculty and staff of the College are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarly activity and service.

In addition to courses and programs, the College of Science is charged with the responsibility for providing the expertise, resources, laboratories, equipment, and additional learning experiences necessary for each student to progress in meeting academic, personal, and career goals.

The College mission is implemented through the faculty, students, and staff from the following units: the Harold and Pearl Dripps’ Department of Agricultural Sciences (DDAS), the Department of Biology and Health Sciences (BIHS), the Department of Chemistry and Physics (CHPH), the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DMSc), and the College of Science Academic Computing and Learning Center (ACLC). 

Scholarly Activity and Service

While the College of Science faculty mainly concentrates on teaching that results in the continued success by students in studying and learning, the faculty is also encouraged to pursue scholarly activity and research as a means of keeping themselves, the students, and the courses up-to-date in the respective disciplines. Applied research in areas related to the regional environment, local business and industries in southwest Louisiana is also undertaken by faculty and students.

Faculty and students are involved in community service activities such as science fairs, career days, competitions, and school, civic, and scholarly society presentations.

Special Accreditations

• The American Chemical Society approves the Chemistry degree.
• The Medical Laboratory Science degree is accredited by the Accreditation Services of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and approved by the American Medical Association.
• The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits the Radiologic Sciences degree.
• The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredits the dietetic concentration in Nutrition and Food Science, which is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ agency for education programs.

College of Science Academic Computing and Learning Center

The mission of the College of Science Academic Computing and Learning Center (ACLC) is to facilitate and support the instructional and technical needs of the departments, students, faculty, and staff of the College of Science. ACLC provides necessary computer hardware and software for the courses in the academic computing center, the MATH 113 lab, and the two studios for the Department of Mathematical Sciences. ACLC also runs a tutoring center for students in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and other courses upon request. In addition ACLC maintains a testing center that assists instructors with make-up quizzes, tests, and exams.

The student technicians of ACLC interface with Information Technology on campus-wide technical issues and offer workshops and other technical education services to university personnel and students.
