Department of Mass Communication

Mission

The Department of Mass Communication provides graduates with the knowledge to actively participate in media and related professions in a modern and multicultural environment.

Fundamental to this mission is the faculty commitment to teaching, community service, and student success.

The Department of Mass Communication offers a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with concentrations in integrated digital media, journalism, public relations, and sports and entertainment communication. The department also offers minors in communication studies and mass communication as well as a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Strategic Corporate Communication.

Majors in the Department of Mass Communication who will seek admission to law school should see the Preparation for Law School section of the College of Liberal Arts  page for course recommendations and should ask their academic advisor to integrate the recommended courses into their curricula.

The department encourages majors to participate in extracurricular activities such as Debate Council, Public Relations Student Society of America, and Society of Professional Journalists as these organizations provide students with valuable pre-professional experiences. The department also houses a chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honors society.
