Department of Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences supports the mission of McNeese State University by offering quality programs of study in the mathematical sciences. The department offers courses for majors, non-majors, and professionals updating their knowledge in various areas of the mathematical sciences. The department seeks to promote and encourage scholarly activities and service from all mathematical sciences faculty.

Curricula

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences degree with concentrations in computational sciences, mathematical physics, mathematics, mathematics education grades 6-12, physics education grades 6-12, and statistics. A growing number of students are completing double-degrees in mathematical sciences and other related fields. The department encourages students to consider this option early in their academic careers. The Department of Mathematical Sciences also offers minors in applied statistics, general statistics, and mathematics.

General education courses in the mathematical sciences are offered to meet the needs of students who do their major work in other departments of the University.

Students majoring in the mathematical sciences receive preparation for work in business, education, and industry, as well as undergraduate prerequisites for work on advanced degrees.

Graduation Requirements

Students in the Department of Mathematical Sciences must earn a grade of C or better in all MATH and STAT courses and meet all graduation requirements listed in the Degree and Graduation Requirements  section of the Academic Regulations page. In addition, credit for courses taken at other universities (regardless of subject area) with a grade lower than C cannot be applied toward a mathematical sciences degree. A student concentrating in mathematics education or physics education must also meet all requirements for admission and progression through the teacher education program, teacher residency, and graduation as stated on the Teacher Education Preparation Portals  page.

Each student is also required to complete a capstone experience which includes taking a departmental test in the major area.

Graduate Studies

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers a program leading to the Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences. The student may choose a concentration in computer science, mathematics, or statistics. Additional information and curricula are available on the program pages below.
