Program Admission

By meeting the general requirements for admission and the following prerequisites, applicants can enroll in Portal I courses:

• Possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a USDOE-approved institutional accreditor; and
• Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral.

In order to be formally admitted into a post-baccalaureate initial teacher certification program and progress toward Portal II courses, a candidate must meet the following requirements:

• Pass the Praxis content-specific examination(s) in the content area(s) in which they are seeking certification.
• Complete, report, and submit all requirements of the EDUC 499 packet, including the Praxis content exam scores. The packet must be completed by the end of the semester in which the candidate is enrolled in EDUC 499. A prescription plan for the practitioner license (PL) will be provided after the EDUC 499 packet is approved.

This program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Term 1: Fall - 7 hours

Note:  EDUC 203 requires 10 field experience hours, and EDUC 220 requires 5 field experience hours.

EDUC 499 packet must be approved prior to enrolling in EDUC 300/400 level courses.

Term 2: Spring - 6 hours

Note:  EDUC 323 and EDUC 333 require 15 field experience hours each.

• EDUC 323 - Methods of Teaching Mathematics in Middle School Cr: 3
• EDUC 333 - Methods and Materials in Reading for Secondary Teachers Cr: 3
• EDUC 400 - Admission to Teacher Residency - Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Cr: 0

Term 3: Summer - 6 hours

• EDTC 245 - Educational Technology Foundations Cr: 3
• EDUC 414 - Classroom Engagement and Management Cr: 2
• SPED 320 - Survey of Contemporary Topics and Issues in Special Education Cr: 1

Term 4: Fall - 8 hours

Note:  EDUC 351 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 469 requires 20 field experience hours, and (EDUC 460M requires a minimum of 60% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 4-8 classroom completing residency hours, or EDUC 462M requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 4-8 classroom as the teacher of record).

Note:  EDUC 330 requires 15 field experience hours, and (EDUC 461M requires 100% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 4-8 classroom completing residency hours, or EDUC 463M requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 4-8 classroom as the teacher of record).

Note

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all courses applied to the certificate.
