Elementary Education Grades 1-5, MAT

Program Admission

By meeting the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies and the following prerequisites, applicants can enroll in Portal I courses:

• Possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a USDOE-approved institutional accreditor; and
• Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral.

In order to be formally admitted into the Master of Arts in Teaching program and progress into Portal II courses, a candidate must meet the following requirements:

• Pass the Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects exam (#5001).
• Complete, report, and submit all requirements of the EDUC 599 packet, including the Praxis content exam scores. The packet must be completed prior to the semester in which the candidate is enrolled in EDUC 599. A prescription plan for the practitioner license (PL) will be provided after the EDUC 599 packet is approved.

The Elementary Education Grades 1-5, MAT program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Term 1: Fall - 7 hours

Note: EDUC 524 and EDUC 648 require 10 field experience hours each.

• EDUC 524 - Elementary Classroom Engagement and Management Cr: 2
• EDUC 617 - Planning and Instruction in the Content Area Cr: 2
• EDUC 648 - Reading in the Early Elementary Classroom Cr: 3

Term 2: Spring - 6 hours

Note: EDUC 621 and EDUC 649 require 15 field experience hours each.

• EDUC 599 - Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program Cr: 0
• EDUC 600 - Admission to Teacher Residency - Master of Arts in Teaching Cr: 0
• EDUC 621 - Elementary School Mathematics Program Cr: 3
• EDUC 649 - Reading in the Upper Elementary Classroom Cr: 3

Term 3: Summer - 6 hours

Note: EDTC 638 requires 10 field experience hours, and EDUC 503 requires 30 field experience hours. 

• EDTC 638 - Cross Curriculum Planning and Instruction Cr: 3
• EDUC 503 - Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties Cr: 3

Term 4: Fall - 9 hours

Note: EDUC 654 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 681 requires 20 field experience hours, and (EDUC 666E requires a minimum of 80% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 1-5 classroom completing residency hours, or EDUC 676E requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 1-5 classroom as the teacher of record).

• EDUC 654 - Problems in Measurement and Evaluation Cr: 3
• EDUC 681 - MAT Residency I Performance Portfolio Cr: 2

  Choose one of the following:

• EDUC 666E - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency and Seminar I Cr: 4
• EDUC 676E - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency-Internship and Seminar I Cr: 4

Term 5: Spring - 8 hours

Note: EDUC 530 and EDUC 531 require 10 field experience hours each, and (EDUC 667E requires 80% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 1-5 classroom completing residency hours, or EDUC 677E requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 1-5 classroom as the teacher of record).

• EDUC 530 - Science in the Elementary Classroom Cr: 2
• EDUC 531 - Social Studies in the Elementary Classroom Cr: 2

• EDUC 667E - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency and Seminar II Cr: 4
• EDUC 677E - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency-Internship and Seminar II Cr: 4

Note

Students enrolled in EDUC 666E, EDUC 666S, EDUC 667E, EDUC 667S, EDUC 676E, EDUC 676S, EDUC 677E, or EDUC 677S are considered full-time students in the fall and spring semesters to prevent student loans from entering repayment status, for insurance purposes, and for Citizenship and Immigration Services (SEVIS) reporting.

General Notes

• At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
• Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
• No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
• Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
