Total Hours Required for Degree: 30 (Thesis Option) or 36 (Non-thesis Option)

Program Admission


In addition to the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies, applicants for admission to the Mathematical Sciences, MS program must have:

  • A minimum score of 291 on the GRE (Verbal + Quantitative);
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75; and
  • Calculus sequence and Linear Algebra together with 12 hours of Mathematical Sciences at the junior/senior level and adequate preparation as determined by the department head. To determine deficiencies, the applicant may be required to take a placement test. The results of the test would determine additional, required undergraduate coursework.

Notes


  • For thesis option, 21 hours (including 6 hours of MATH 699) must be at the 600 level. For non-thesis option, 18 hours must be at the 600 level.
  • All courses toward the degree must be approved by the student’s advisor and the coordinator of the program.
  • For non-thesis option, the candidate is required to pass satisfactorily a comprehensive written examination and/or oral examination for the courses taken for graduate credit.

General Notes


  • At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
  • Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
  • No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
  • Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
