Secondary Education Grades 6-12 [Chinese], MAT

Prerequisites

By meeting the general requirements for admission to the William J. Dore’, Sr. School of Graduate Studies and the following prerequisites, applicants can enroll in Portal I courses:

• Possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited university.
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 on undergraduate coursework.

In order to be formally admitted into the Master of Arts in Teaching program and progress into Portal II courses, a candidate must meet the following requirements:

• Pass the Core Academic Skills for Educators test (e.g., reading, writing, and mathematics) of the Praxis.
• Pass the content-specific examinations of the Praxis.  Candidates for grades 6-12 (regular and special education) must pass the content specialty examination(s) in the content area(s) in which they intend to teach: Agricultural Education, Biology Education, Business Education, Chemistry Education, English Education, Foreign Language Education (Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish), Mathematics Education, and/or Social Studies Education.
• Complete, report, and submit all requirements of the EDUC 599 packet to the Office of Graduate Education Programs.

• EDUC 624 - Reading in the Content Area (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• EDUC 635 - Principles of Learning and Teaching in Secondary Education (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• EDUC 640 - Pedagogies of Assessment and Intervention for Reluctant Learners (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• EDUC 647 - Educational Foundations (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• EDUC 654 - Problems in Measurement and Evaluation (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• EDUC 678 - Seminar in Teaching Strategies (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)
• PSYC 634 - Adolescent Growth and Development (Lec. 3, Cr. 3)

• 
  Choose one of the the following:

• EDUC 683 - MAT Clinical Experience (Lab. 12, Cr. 6)
• EDUC 685 - Internship (Lab. 6, Cr. 3)  (Must be repeated to accrue 6 credit hours)

Note

Students enrolled in EDUC 683 or 685 are considered full-time students in the fall and spring semesters to prevent student loans from entering repayment status, for insurance purposes, and for Citizenship and Immigration Services reporting.

General Notes

• At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600-level.
• Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
• No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
• Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
