English (M.A.)

Prerequisites


In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in English program must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum score of 1100 on the GRE formula (150 x undergraduate GPA + GRE [Verbal + Quantitative] score).
  • An application packet (consisting of a letter of application and an academic writing sample) sent to the M.A. Advisor in the Department of English.
  • Adequate preparation as determined by department head and major professor.

Requirements


Total Hours: 30

  • *Other courses in English - 18
  • Thesis - 6
    In lieu of a thesis, a candidate may elect to take 12 additional hours in English (for a total of 36 credit hours for the degree).

*Must include at least one course in each of the following areas:


V. Elective in British and American Literature:


Choose course from Area II or Area III.

VI. General English Elective:

One-half of the total number of hours required for the degree, excluding credit for the thesis, shall be in 600 level courses. Students who are considering pursuing a Ph.D. are strongly encouraged to complete the equivalent of 2 years course work in a foreign language. These students are also encouraged to complete a thesis.

In order to complete the requirements for degree, students must pass comprehensive examinations, which include a comprehensive objective exam, a portfolio review, and a series of professor-directed individual exams.
