Department of Psychology and Counseling

Purpose

The purpose of the Department of Psychology and Counseling is fivefold:

  1. To prepare students to enter the work force;
  2. To prepare undergraduates for additional training leading to professional careers;
  3. To enhance the knowledge, skills, and understanding of graduate students;
  4. To provide service courses to non-majors; and
  5. To encourage scholarly production.

Curricula

The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Students majoring in psychology may select a minor from among those listed in the catalog, or they may fulfill their minor requirements with 15 credit hours of courses in an academic discipline or field that does not provide a minor. These must be approved by the student’s academic advisor.

Graduation Requirements

Students in the Department of Psychology and Counseling must meet the graduation requirements listed in the Degree and Graduation Requirements  section of the Academic Regulations page.

Graduate Studies

The Department of Psychology and Counseling offers a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, as well as a Master of Arts in Psychology with two concentrations: applied behavior analysis and general/experimental. These graduate programs are designed to give students a deeper understanding of human behavior from a variety of perspectives. Students complete psychology or counseling content courses and then develop a specialization within their concentration with the help of an academic advisor. Students also complete either several semesters of clinical internship or a one-year thesis project. Internships are available at a variety of human services agencies. Graduates go on to work in business or research careers, enter private practice, work for human service agencies, or continue their education in doctoral programs. Additional information and curricula are available on the program pages below.
