H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology

Purpose

The purpose of the H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology is fourfold:

1. Prepare future healthcare professionals in the areas of health performance studies, pre-chiropractic medicine, pre-occupational therapy, pre-orthopedic physician assistant studies, pre-physical therapy, sport and wellness management, and sports medicine.
2. Prepare teachers and coaches in the areas of health, physical, and recreation education.
3. Promote proper health habits and physical fitness of the McNeese community.
4. Provide and promote leadership in activities related to health professions.

Curricula

The Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology offers concentrations in health and physical education grades K-12, health performance studies, pre-chiropractic medicine, pre-occupational therapy, pre-orthopedic physician assistant studies, pre-physical therapy, sport and wellness management, and sports medicine. The health and physical education grades K-12 concentration is a teacher education program that leads to initial teacher certification. The health performance studies concentration is designed to give students an overview of the multiple disciplines that fall under Kinesiology by exposing students to knowledge and skills through the inclusion of courses from multiple disciplines within our program. The pre-chiropractic medicine concentration is designed to prepare students interested in seeking a doctoral degree in chiropractic medicine. The pre-occupational therapy concentration is designed to prepare students interested in seeking a masters’ or doctoral degree in occupational therapy. The pre-orthopedic physician assistant studies concentration is designed to prepare students interested in seeking a master’s degree in physician assistant studies. The pre-physical therapy concentration is designed to prepare students interested in seeking a doctoral degree in physical therapy. The sport and wellness management concentration is designed for students interested in managing and marketing athletics and/or working in the wellness industry. The sports medicine concentration is designed to prepare students who are interested in seeking a master’s degree in athletic training.

Each concentration within the H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology is updated regularly based upon professional and educational requirements to ensure students are prepared to follow their professional aspirations. These updates assure that concentrations include the most commonly required prerequisite courses for professional degree programs as well as up-to-date skill sets that will greatly benefit student performance once they matriculate into the professional world.  

The H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology also offers two minors: coaching and sports medicine. Coaching includes courses that emphasize the skill sets necessary for success as a leader and administrator in the athletic setting. Coaching is open to all students at McNeese; however, it is best suited for accompanying majors related to educational settings. Sports medicine includes courses that emphasize the study of human movement and the evaluation of conditions that affect active individuals. Sports medicine is open to all students at McNeese; however, it is best suited for accompanying majors related to medical professions.

Graduation Requirements

Only HHP and KNES courses with a grade of C or better may be applied toward the degree.

Students pursuing the health and physical education grades K-12 concentration must meet all requirements for admission and progression through the teacher education program, teacher residency, and graduation as stated on the Teacher Education Preparation Portals  page.

Students pursuing teacher certification should obtain certification in a second teaching area. Certification requirements for a second teaching area may be obtained from an advisor.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology must meet the following requirements for internship candidacy: (1) complete at least 90 hours of coursework with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better; (2) complete ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 with a grade of C or better; and (3) complete KNES 111, 124, and 331, or receive permission from the concentration coordinator.

Students in the H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology must meet the graduation requirements listed in the Degree and Graduation Requirements  section of the Academic Regulations page.

Graduate Studies

The H.C. Drew School of Kinesiology offers programs leading to the Master of Science in Kinesiology with two concentrations: health and wellness promotion and sports performance. The health and wellness promotion concentration is designed for students who are interested in becoming a leader of health and wellness in corporations, private industry, or the public sector. The sports performance concentration is designed for students interested in a career in the fitness and wellness industries, focusing on the physiology of exercise and helping active individuals achieve optimal performance.
