Prerequisites


In addition to the general requirements for admission to Graduate School, applicants for admission to the Master of Arts in English program must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum score of 1100 on the GRE formula (150 x undergraduate GPA + GRE [Verbal + Quantitative] score).
  • Adequate preparation as determined by department head and major professor.

Requirements


Total Hours: 30

  • *Other courses in English - 21
  • Thesis - 6 In lieu of a thesis, a candidate may elect to take 12 additional hours in English (for a total of 36 credit hours for the degree) and omit the foreign language requirement.

One-half of the total number of hours required for the degree, excluding credit for the thesis, shall be in courses open to graduate students only. A candidate shall demonstrate the achievement of an acceptable level of competence in a foreign language by (a) completing with a B average the foreign language requirement specified by the Department of English and Foreign Languages for the baccalaureate degree in English, (b) passing a reading knowledge examination in that language administered by the Department of English and Foreign Languages at McNeese State University, or (c) making an acceptable score on the Educational Testing Service’s reading knowledge examination in that language. The candidate’s choice of a foreign language shall be approved by the Head of the Department of English and Foreign Languages and the major professor.
