Requirements for the Degree


Total Hours: 33-36

Courses in music education, 15 credit hours, including:

  • 2Approved Electives in the concentration area, music, music education, and/or education - 12-15

1With approval of the major professor, a candidate may choose to complete a thesis in an area of music education. Under this option, the student will enroll in MUED 699 (Thesis) instead of MUSC 617 or 630 and 3 semester credit hours of electives. A thesis is recommended for candidates planning to pursue doctoral studies.
2Electives will be selected from graduate courses in conducting, literature, and pedagogy in the concentration area (instrumental, vocal, or Kodály studies), performance, music history and music theory, and approved education courses. At least two semesters or summer sessions of music ensemble are required. No more than 2 credit hours may be applied toward graduation requirements. Candidates seeking the concentration in Kodály studies will successfully complete the full Kodály Certification Program (MUED 518, 528, 619, 629, 620 as elective credits and MUED 630).
