The Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics Education Grades 6-12 Concentration, BS program leads to initial teacher certification. All teacher education preparation requirements must be satisfied for this degree (see Teacher Education Preparation Portals ).

Teacher Education Requirements


EDUC 200 packet must be approved prior to enrolling in EDUC and SPED 300/400 level courses, with the exception of EDUC 318.

Sophomore Fall - 18 hours


Note: EDTC 245 requires 5 field experience hours.

Teacher Education Requirements


The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT): Grades 7-12 exam (#5624) must be passed prior to enrolling in EDUC 474S.

Sophomore Spring - 17 hours


Note: EDUC 333 requires 15 field experience hours.

  • Elective - 1 hour

The Praxis Mathematics: Content Knowledge exam must be passed prior to enrolling in EDUC 474S.

Teacher Education Requirements


Candidates must enroll in EDUC 300 the semester prior to enrolling in Baccalaureate Residency and Seminar I. The Praxis PLT and the Praxis content exams must be passed by the end of the semester in which the candidate is registered for EDUC 300.

Non-education courses taken during residency semesters must be scheduled either in the evening or online.

Senior Fall - 12 hours


Note: EDUC 351 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 469 requires 20 field experience hours, and EDUC 474S requires a minimum of 60% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 6-12 classroom completing residency hours.

Senior Spring - 10 hours


Note: EDUC 475S requires 80% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 6-12 classroom completing residency hours.

Students must earn a grade of C or better in EDTC 245, ENGL 101, and ENGL 102, as well as in all EDUC, MATH, PSYC, and SPED courses.

General Notes


  • All bachelor’s degrees must include 40 hours at the 300/400 level.
  • All bachelor’s degrees require the successful completion of at least nine hours of Natural Sciences General Education Core Curriculum  courses. Six hours shall be earned in a single life or physical science; the remaining three hours must be earned in a natural science area other than that previously selected (both life and physical sciences must be taken to fulfill this requirement).
