Curriculum and Instruction, Academically Gifted Education Concentration, MEd

Program Admission

In addition to the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies, applicants for admission to the Curriculum and Instruction, Academically Gifted Education Concentration, MEd program must have:

• Evidence of a valid teaching certificate; and
• One of the following:
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral; or
  • Undergraduate GPA between 2.7 and 2.99 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral and a minimum Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score of 304 (Verbal + Quantitative); or
  • Undergraduate GPA below 2.7 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral and an earned master’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.00 at the time of degree conferral.

The Curriculum and Instruction, Academically Gifted Education Concentration, MEd program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Term 1: Fall - 9 hours

Note: EDTC 602 requires 25 field experience hours, EDUC 686 requires 15 field experience hours, and EDUC 688 requires 20 field experience hours.

• EDUC 603 - Admission to the Master of Education Program Cr: 0
• EDUC 686 - Characteristics of Gifted Individuals Cr: 3
• EDUC 688 - Methods for Teaching the Academically Gifted Cr: 3

Term 2: Spring - 9 hours

Note: EDUC 608 requires 15 field experience hours, EDUC 687 requires 20 field experience hours, and EDUC 690 requires 50 field experience hours.

• EDUC 608 - Policy, Law, and Ethics in P-12 Education Cr: 3
• EDUC 687 - Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted Cr: 3
• EDUC 690 - Practicum in Curriculum and Instruction Cr: 3

Term 3: Summer - 6 hours

Note: EDUC 601 requires 10 field experience hours, and EDUC 689 requires 15 field experience hours.

• EDUC 601 - Research I: Foundations of Educational Research Cr: 3
• EDUC 689 - Creative Thinking and Problem Solving Cr: 3

Term 4: Fall - 6 hours

Note: EDUC 504 requires 25 field experience hours, and EDUC 670 requires 10 field experience hours.

• EDUC 504 - Mentor Teacher Training I Cr: 3
• EDUC 670 - Research II: Applied Educational Research Cr: 3

Term 5: Spring - 6 hours

Note: (EDUC 505, EDUC 506, EDUC 507, or EDUC 508) requires 25 field experience hours, and EDUC 699 requires 10 field experience hours.

• EDUC 699 - Research III: Seminar in Educational Research Cr: 3

• EDUC 505 - Mentor Teacher Training II for Elementary Education Cr: 3
• EDUC 506 - Mentor Teacher Training II for Secondary ELA Cr: 3

• EDUC 508 - Mentor Teacher Training II for Universal Cr: 3

General Notes

• At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
• Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
• No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
• Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
