Program Admission

By meeting the general requirements for admission  to the William J. Doré, Sr. School of Graduate Studies and the following prerequisites, applicants can enroll in Portal I courses:

• Possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a USDOE-approved institutional accreditor; and
• Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5 at the time of baccalaureate degree conferral.

In order to be formally admitted into the Master of Arts in Teaching program and progress into Portal II courses, candidates must meet the following requirements:

• Pass the content-specific examinations in the content area(s) in which they intend to teach:

• Complete, report, and submit all requirements of the EDUC 599 packet, including the Praxis content exam scores. The packet must be completed prior to the semester in which the candidate is enrolled in EDUC 599. A prescription plan for the practitioner license (PL) will be provided after the EDUC 599 packet is approved.

The Secondary Education Grades 6-12 [Business], MAT program does not accept applicants on a conditional basis.

Term 1: Fall - 8 hours

Note: EDUC 525 requires 10 field experience hours, and EDUC 624 requires 15 field experience hours.

EDUC 599 packet must be approved prior to enrolling in Portal II courses. Always confirm the required Praxis exam numbers with your advisor prior to testing.

• EDUC 617 - Planning and Instruction in the Content Area Cr: 2
• EDUC 624 - Reading in the Content Area for Secondary Education Cr: 3

Term 2: Spring - 6 hours

Note: EDUC 587 requires 20 field experience hours, and EDUC 657 requires 10 field experience hours.

Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching exam must be passed prior to enrolling in EDUC 666S or EDUC 676S.

• EDUC 599 - Admission to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program Cr: 0
• EDUC 600 - Admission to Teacher Residency - Master of Arts in Teaching Cr: 0
• EDUC 657 - Demystifying Dyslexia and Related Learning Differences Cr: 3

Term 3: Summer - 6 hours

Note: EDTC 638 requires 10 field experience hours, and SPED 623 requires 20 field experience hours.

• EDTC 638 - Cross Curriculum Planning and Instruction Cr: 3
• SPED 623 - Advanced Consultation and Collaboration Strategies for Program Planning Cr: 3

Term 4: Fall - 9 hours

Note: EDUC 654 requires 10 field experience hours, EDUC 681 requires 20 field experience hours, and (EDUC 666S requires a minimum of 60% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 6-12 classroom in the area of certification completing residency hours, or EDUC 676S requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 6-12 classroom in the area of certification as the teacher of record).

• EDUC 654 - Problems in Measurement and Evaluation Cr: 3
• EDUC 681 - MAT Residency I Performance Portfolio Cr: 2

• EDUC 666S - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency and Seminar I Cr: 4
• EDUC 676S - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency-Internship and Seminar I Cr: 4

Term 5: Spring - 7 hours

Note: EDUC 590 requires 10 field experience hours, and (EDUC 667S requires 80% of the instructional week in an assigned grade 6-12 classroom in the area of certification completing residency hours, or EDUC 677S requires 100% of the instructional week in a grade 6-12 classroom in the area of certification as the teacher of record).

• EDUC 590 - Methods, Models, and Strategies for Teaching in Secondary Content Areas II Cr: 3

  Choose one of the following:

• EDUC 667S - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency and Seminar II Cr: 4
• EDUC 677S - Master of Arts in Teaching Residency-Internship and Seminar II Cr: 4

Note

Students enrolled in EDUC 666E, EDUC 666S, EDUC 667E, EDUC 667S, EDUC 676E, EDUC 676S, EDUC 677E, or EDUC 677S are considered full-time students in the fall and spring semesters to prevent student loans from entering repayment status, for insurance purposes, and for Citizenship and Immigration Services (SEVIS) reporting.

General Notes

• At least one-half of the total number of credit hours required for a graduate degree, excluding credit for thesis, must be at the 600 level.
• Credits applied must be earned within 6 calendar years from the time the student first enrolled in the program.
• No grade below C and not more than 6 credit hours of C work can be applied toward the degree.
• Only transfer credits with a grade of B or better may be applied toward the degree.
